Discussion Questions wk 7/5

  1. After reading all the posts I can say that I definitely enjoyed reading everyones work and have learned a lot from them. The post that stood out to me the most was Kayla’s post titled “The Life of a Veteran:What Comes After Service”. One thing that stood out to me the most is when she mentioned that many veterans have trouble assimilating back into their pre-war lives.Kayla mentioned that “health issues (as a result of military service) have on unemployment amongst veterans which intern makes it harder to re-enter the workforce.” She then mentioned that because of unemployment these veterans also develop many mental illnesses which also makes it more difficult for them to get jobs. The Ted-Talk she included reminded me a lot of “Soldiers Home” by Ernest Hemmingway which told a story of a man who had a lot of trouble fitting in once he returned home from war. He had trouble communicating with others, and he felt like he did’t have a place anywhere. In the Ted-Talk Brian O’Conner mentioned that after the military he didn’t know who he was anymore and struggled with assimilating into civilian life. This has made me realize that there should be a form of support for Veterans who are transitioning back to normal life. There are many challenges that come with their transition so I feel like there should be a system in place where they are accommodated in the workforce.
  2. In the article “The Issue with diversity in Computing” Bogost mentions that computing culture has made it so ” everyone is focused on the nuts and bolts of making software”. I agree that this is a hinderance to equity and care within this software. I would also point out that these conclusions which Bogost discusses, add weight to the argument that computing as a whole is the entire issue.

For my TSIS I decided to agree . I initially wanted to tie it back to Margaret Heffernan’s Ted-Talk from last week since she mentioned that technology cannot do what humans can, and I thought it connected to the quote “critical thinking is what the computers won’t be able to do” from Bogost article. I couldn’t figure out how to properly set it up so it my statement would make sense so instead I combined two TSIS templates (one form chapter 4 and the other from chapter 5) so that I could make my statement.

  1. Oumou,
I agree that a post that stood out to me the most was Kayla’s post titled “The Life of a Veteran: What Comes After Service”. As a proud grandchild of service members, it is sad to think of the challenges assimilating back into pre-war lives. I was pleased to see very recently in the news…June 24, 2021 at the National Veterans Resource Center on University Hill, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, and Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) declaring the launch of SyracuseServes, a new support network for veterans and their families. The SyracuseServes Coordination Center will be headquartered at SU.
“Because of SU, the City of Syracuse is fortunate to be home to IVMF, one of the nation’s top centers of support for the post-service lives of the nation’s military veterans and their families,” said Mayor Walsh. “The IVMF’s AmericaServes program is a recognized model for coordinating the resources available in local communities for veterans and their families. I am grateful to Chancellor Kent Syverud and Vice Chancellor Haynie for answering the community’s call to establish a SyracuseServes network here in the City of Syracuse.” In partnership with the City of Syracuse, the network will connect veterans and their families to local community providers to ensure care, resources and services are easily and successfully navigable. The overall goal is to maximize collaboration and enhance efficiency for the regional network of providers. This program will offer not only help with employment assistance, but VA benefits, education, transportation, mental/behavioral health resources and housing. Moreover, today’s military families cope with the challenges of equity and accessibility. This is due to the fact that many are persons of color and have disabilities resulting from their military service. This program is supported by a $500,000 grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, SyracuseServes will support the city’s veterans.
So hopefully this system will help our veterans acquire employment and other services which will ease their transition to non-military life.

    1. For starters, Thank you to your grandparents for their service!I had no idea about Syracuse serves so thank you for that article as well. I agree that this is an amazing idea to launch a network that will support veterans and their families, they definitely deserve it.

    2. Thanks for sharing all this info–SU has been developing additional resources for veterans for years, and it’s interesting to hear about the city’s partnership with the university. My brother (SU ’01) is active-duty Air Force and tells me that the University’s profile among military members and veterans has really been on the rise as a result of all this investment.

  2. Hi Oumou,

Using the templates has been really tricky for me as well. Even though you said you were unable to properly set up a statement with Margaret Heffernan’s Ted-Talk , I liked how you connected the content. I agree with the your “I say” in your template but I am left wondering more! I wanted to know what about why you think it adds weight. Is it because the arguments are well structured or because of the content, or both? Obviously, you do not have to answer my questions, and this was an exercise, but I just wanted to say I think you are doing a great job with a templates, but as a reader I just wanted to know more about your own thoughts.

    1. This makes for a great starting point–a way for Oumou to then continue to talk about how each of these folks adds to the conversation around these issues. That’s a valuable role for templates like this to play–to kickstart your discussion of the complexities surrounding a particular topic.
