Response 6/21

  1. I would like to “expand the canon” by researching about LGBTQIA+ diversity in the workforce. Currently, I do not know much about this topic. However, I think it is important to educate myself and others about it. For this assignment, I would like to read a variety of texts and watch a few videos. I think it is crucial to hear from researchers and experts, but more importantly personal narratives of those facing discrimination in the workplace based on their sexual or gender identity. I plan on gathering statistics to show how “real”, important, and widespread this issue truly is through using the Syracuse Library databases. I also think it would be interesting to reference specific companies that have implemented programs and resources to address this. Additionally, it would be helpful to hear from hiring managers and diversity leaders on their experience with this topic. Finally, I would like to find proposed solutions to fostering more inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community in the workplace.

2. In Kaplan and Donavan’s book, they argue that people generally have good intentions regarding inclusivity but can unconsciously overlook situations which can become hurtful and harmful. The authors urge readers to constantly consider the importance of diversity throughout our daily decisions. I agree with the authors claims and believe that this excerpt has the potential to spark change within because of the real and powerful story told about Kim.  Through sharing a day in the life of Kim , these authors have clearly identified detrimental patterns in the culture of careers and have provided solutions to address these issues.

I used components of my Kaplan and Donavan response to craft this one. I am still getting comfortable using the templates and I am questioning if I am doing it correctly. I was not sure if my “I say” was strong enough or even made sense but I wanted to try it out instead of using two of the “they say”.

  1. Hi Joanna,

I really liked how in your decision to expand the canon, you chose to research more about an outsider group that none of the articles have really touched on yet. Delving deeper into the biases surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community in the good workplace is a great way to both stay on the larger issue of inclusivity in organizations and make the research your own by straying from already talked about examples. I also think that looking into the hiring process of companies is a good idea because it would be helpful to see how their job can impact the organization and determine how much diversity is there.

  2. Joanna, I think it is a great point that you make about how important it is to include personal narratives in your research. Afterall, what good is a plan if we don’t hear from the people most affected by it? I am also really encouraged by your exploration of a topic you have limited knowledge of. That is one of the key steps in Diversity and Inclusion work, which is to familiarize yourself with something outside of your own sphere. The idea that you also want to reference companies that have already implemented LGBTQIA+ diversity policies as well as research solutions for better inclusion, is another exciting aspect of your research that I am looking forward to reading about!

  3. Hi Joanna, I think that your topic for Expanding the Canon is very intriguing. I personally have never thought about how difficult it must be for members of the LGBTQIA communities in their workplaces so I look forward to hearing more about it. I also do agree that it will be very beneficial if you can find first hand accounts of this experience from members of this community so that it is as authentic as it can be . I like how you formatted your They say/I say and it seems very clear and organized since you provided something said in Kaplan and Donovan and then provided your stance as well as why you agreed.

  4. Hey Joanna,

Your decision to discuss the impact being a part of the LGBTQ+ community has on employment is very interesting. I believe that using the Syracuse University Library a starting point for your research is an excellent idea considering the wide variety of texts it has to offer. If you are interested on videos that would provide deeper insight into the lives of members of the LGBTQ+ community with regard to workplace environments, this TED Talk is very informative.

  5. Sounds like an interesting research path–as you’ve pointed out, in the long run it will be important to engage with a variety of voices on this subject. At this moment, you’re looking for just 1 article, so you might not find something all-encompassing, but that’s okay. This first article should give you an entry point into the subject matter, and you’ll have the opportunity to build and add perspectives as we continue. I look forward to seeing what you find.
