What I am trying to figure out with my research is what type of effect does food have on individuals when they experience the process of grief, specifically with a family member. My target audience for this piece will be families that are in the process of grieving because with at least one person knowing the effects that food can have on an individual, even a family, can help out with the grieving process when learned and applied. Some different ways I could see this text form into is an informational essay, giving important information about the ways that food can positively and negatively effect the individual and family during grieving times. I could also see this essay taking persuasive turn, persuading people to make food as a family, or just different tips in this subject.

I think your subject is very interesting and creative. You chose a topic that wouldn’t occur to a lot of people to think about but could be very helpful knowledge to have. You are have the opportunity for present food in a really interesting light and I love the connection you are king with it helping grief. Personally I think that making it an informational essay is the best route you and take with this and the grieving public is a great audience. If you wanted to make it an argumentative essay, you could argue that this information should be more available to the public and persuade places like hospitals to put up posters and pamphlets with the information for people to see and learn about. Your target audience for that would be the hospitals or grief counseling centers to convince them there is a need to have the information available at their sites.
You’ve listed several options here; as you’re thinking about this some more, remember that you’re not limited to an essay format–you can write in whatever genre/mode you think would be easiest and most satisfying for your target audience.
This is a really interesting topic! After volunteering at Francis House too I can see how much food plays a role in the lives of the patients at hospice care. For today’s in-class assignment, I read an informative pamphlet on hospice care and I read that food should be something that shouldn’t be forced on an individual because of how difficult it might be to eat during end of life. So, this is something you can definitely look into as a negative impact of food, perhaps. Even though we as humans see food as a source of survival, for some patients, there is a high possibility of loss of appetite so food may not be comforting as we may think. Really great ideas that you have so far! You can probably even format your text into a pamphlet or another informative format. 🙂
